Essential Minerals

Minerals are components of body tissues and fluids that work in combination with enzymes, hormones, and vitamins. Mineral deficiencies are regional, not based on species, so you should check with your vet in the area to see what the deficiencies are in the area.

Calcium and Phosphorus closely related; they are both needed together. More Calcium is generally needed, but if Alfalfa and grain are given (which has lots of Calcium), then Phosphorus needed to equalize them.

Selenium improves reproductive functions, muscle development (the heart being the most important one), and the functioning of the immune system. It is also very important in helping to ward off the effects of stress.

Minerals come in hard blocks or in loose form in bags. Because some Llamas don't like the lick blocks, many people give the Llamas the loose minerals in mineral feeders.

Calcium
Most abundant. 98% in bone tissue, therefore, critical to structure and strength.
Phosphorus
Second most abundant. Many enzymes and the B vitamins are activated only with Phosphorus.
Potassium
Maintains cellular integrity and water balance and is involved in muscle contraction and protein metabolism.
Iron
Deficiency causes low red blood cell count.
Magnesium
Associated with tissue breakdown and cell destruction. Helps deal with hot weather and stress.
Manganese
Deficiency may cause large amounts of calcium and phosphorus in intestine.
Iodine
Deficiencies may include impaired physical development of the fetus and poorly formed bones.
Zinc
Used in bone metabolism and plays major role in necessary skin oil gland functions. Also functions in DNA synthesis, wound healing, the immune system, and reducing infant sicknesses.
Copper
Deficiencies may result in low white blood cell count, poor quality fiber, and impaired growth.
Selenium
Plays major role in normal development of fetus during pregnancy and vitality of the newborn. Llamas require higher levels of Selenium than most species.
Salt
Regionally-formulated mineral mixes and mineral blocks are usually available and are highly recommended. If used, do not provide additional salt because it is already there
